Medicare Advantage, Supplement, and Part D Plans
Medicare is complex, so if you are a little unclear, it’s always good to start with the basics before you get a Medicare quote.
What is Medicare?
It’s name of the health insurance program provided by the federal government to people 65 years of age and older. People younger than 65 with certain disabilities and those with end stage renal disease can access Medicare benefits before turning 65.
How is Medicare structured?
Medicare is broken into four parts. Parts A and B (often called Original Medicare), Part C (Medicare Advantage) and Part D (prescription drugs). Part A can be thought of as covering inpatient hospital stays and stays at skilled nursing facilities, while Part B can be summarized as covering healthcare provider services and outpatient care.
What is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan?
Original Medicare covers quite a bit of the cost of covered services, but it doesn’t cover everything. For example, in 2021 your Part A deductible ($1484 per benefit period) must be paid before Medicare begins to help. Part B has a $203 deductible in 2021 and you are still responsible for 20% of all Medicare-approved amounts for health provider services after that. A Medicare Supplement or Medigap plan charges a premium that varies by plan but usually covers the deductibles, coinsurance and co-pays the Original Medicare does not.
What is a Medicare Advantage plan?
Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private companies as an alternative to Original Medicare. They bundle together the coverage in Parts A, B and usually D as well. The are Medicare-approved. The big difference here is the may extra benefits that the plans often offer, benefits that Original Medicare does not offer. For example, many offer coverage for dental, vision, and hearing.
